I've been thinking about the differences a lot lately also. To me, people working with great managers can accomplish exactly what the manager plans. People working with great leaders can accomplish more than anyone envisions. This ideas is well developed in the great book by William Joiner <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FLeadership-Agility-Mastery-Anticipating-Initiating%2Fdp%2F0787979139%3Fie%3DUTF8%26s%3Dbooks%26qid%3D1212000837%26sr%3D1-1&tag=clearblueyond-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325" rel="nofollow">Leadership Agility</a>

I find it very encouraging and yet humiliating to know that there is such deep felt compassion from those with so little in the face of tradegy while we show so little to our own neighbours. Property and pocessions are taken for granted in our society, we should be grateful for the simple things like family, shelter, food and clean water and be more willing to share anything we can.
Good article, makes you think about what you have not what you don't have.

Have just recently "discovered" Erich Fromm and I agree, it's amazing his work isn't being talked about and studied more than it is.

I would say this however: talking and studying is one thing; doing is quite another. I believe we must always strive to go further than our teachers. To recognize what our teachers may have failed to do.

I believe Eric Fromm, would have liked to see some as he put it, some " humanistic communitarian socialist" communities, intentional communities formed. I believe that to be the true task at hand. It needs to be shown it can work in a real living situation. That's the only way it's ever going to be recognized.

A lot of people say "but I don't know how that would look" and that's all and well and good but sooner or later one has to least take the risk and say something about how they think it might work. My proposal is located at www.cooperative-community.info

Very beautifully stated. Thank you.

One of the rare places where you find humility in the body of work surrounding leadership is in Jim Collins' book, Good to Great and his description of Level 5 leadership. However, I also agree it is rare. "Nice" and "Humility" are the Rodney Dangerfield element's of leadership. They get no respect.

Comment on Characteristics of Leadership: Empathy by Benny Greenberg

I recently wrote about ten positive and negative traits of leaders; for both leaders who are great and have failed on my www.ya-ttitude.com site.

A selection:

Understanding: The understanding and sympathetic leader, leads forever. But beware; empty sympathy just like empty compliments will doom you to failure. Your people will know when you are full of hot air, just like you know when someone else is. Understand your people and their problems, and be there for them, always. Leadership by authority or consent is just a positive way to bring the troops in line, show everyone that you care and that you will breed mutual concern and cooperation in a positive and thoughtful manner.

I can’t say it enough:

“They do not care what you know, until they know that you care.”
