It is wrong to think that ‘the leader’ is somehow all knowing. That he, or she, is stronger, greater than others. What is true is that knowledge and understanding, even greatness results from knowing how the world around us works.
Knowing how the world works gives people more real power and ability than the simple awarding of degrees or titles. If you are conscious of what is happening in the social or organisational environment you will be able to identify emerging situations long before that have gotten out of hand. It is worth noting that most situations, no matter how vast or complex they may become, begin both small and simple.
The wise respond to problems when they are still manageable. For the Tao there is no virtue in delaying until heroic action is needed in attempting to set things right.
Those who see the world in black and white as well as those who have a very intricate view of what is happening, for them clarity and understanding are difficult.
The Tao teaches us that if you return again and again to an awareness of what is happening you will find clarity and enlightenment, even experience the power of universal harmony.
A true understanding of leadership is knowing how to act in a given situation. The wise leader, alas a rarity, remains in the background and helps facilitate other people’s process. Because the wise leader does not push or manipulate, there is little, if any, resentment. People in general genuinely appreciate those in authority who facilitate the lives of others rather than promoting their own personal agenda.
Neither charisma nor egocentricity makes a person great. The common ground of all creation is a greater source of life than any exalted isolation. A compassionate person acts on behalf of others in the interests of the greater good. Material simplicity gives one an abundance to share.
It is a mistake to consider those whose only interest is self-interest as either strong or courageous. It is selfish and unwise to think that excessive consumption contributes to the well-being of others. Excessive consumption simply isolates a person from the common ground of existence. Compassion, sharing and equality, on the other hand, sustain life. It underlines the fact that we are all one.
