The exercise of leadership allows us to lead quite and reflective lives.
Sadly, most people are concerned, or fooled, into gathering around them all too many possessions, possessions that they simply don’t need, whereas the reflective and quite path allows time to ponder the beauty and complexity of the natural world that give birth to human life.
The all too busy path is the path of material accumulation and an uninformed life, whereas the contemplative life leads to a sense of the unity of creation.
Foresight tells us that it is wrong that the wealth of the earth is unevenly distributed, with some having a great deal, while most have so very little. Such a world is simply unsustainable. The sad thing is that those encumbered by an oversupply of possessions seem to be driven to acquiring more and more, even bragging about how much they have. Don’t they know that they are stealing? Stealing the earth’s resources while manipulating and impoverishing the lives of billions of people across the world.
Tao and the exercise of leadership tells us that we must have a positive rather than a negative influence on the world. That your influence can impact on what others do. Your influence begins with you thus make sure that it is both effective and positive. Meanwhile, your influence does not necessarily interfere in the lives of others. Interference, however well-meaning can create a dependency rather than creating a interdependency that is so necessary for sustainability.
The exercise of leadership encourages both freedom and responsibility in order to build a healthy and productive environment. It encourages people to discover their own goodness.
Tao tells us that in the group setting, if there is silence, let it grow; something will happen. If there is storm it will eventually resolve into calm. We need to be aware of what is happening and how things happen and thus be better able to steer clear of trouble. When otherwise hidden issues and emotions emerge naturally, they tend to resolve themselves naturally.
